Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > UNWIRE YOUR PRINTER

UNWIRE YOUR PRINTER

The Annoyance:

I'm a big wireless fan, but I have one device that remains tethered to my PC: my printer. I'd like to connect to it wirelessly and share it with my wife who has a computer down the hall. Can I cut the cord?

The Fix:

Start snippin'. All it takes is a wireless print server. The Linksys Instant Wireless Print Server (WPS11) supports the 802.11b standard and can connect to one parallel printer. The company's Wireless-G Print Server (WPS54GU2) works on 802.11g networks (see Figure 7-9) and can connect to two printers (one parallel and one USB). Installation is pretty painless: basically, connect the Print Server to your wireless router or hub, and then connect the printer to the Print Server. Now everyone on your wireless network can access the printer. Both models cost about $130 (http://www.linksys.com).
