Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > NO-FUSS NETWORK BACKUPS

NO-FUSS NETWORK BACKUPS

The Annoyance:

Although I love my home-office network, lugging my external USB hard drive to each computer to back them up is a real bother. But no, no, no-I don't want to set up a file server.

The Fix:

Instead of installing a server, share the drive with all the PCs in your network by attaching it to Linksys's Network Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives (NSLU2). This $99 device connects to a wired or wireless router (see http://snipurl.com/Linksys_storage) and lets everyone in your network access any attached USB 1.x or 2.0 drive for quick and easy backups. You can even share a USB Flash drive with the Linksys unit.
