Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > BRING THE ZING BACK TO DSL

BRING THE ZING BACK TO DSL

The Annoyance:

I have DSL access in my home office, and up until a few weeks ago, it was really fast. Now it's sluggish-web sites appear slowly, and files take forever to download. I've tried every speedup trick I know, even rebooting my DSL modem and router, to no avail.

The Fix:

The same thing happened to me-my DSL line lost its zip. It was nothing I (or you) did wrong. It was my dumb Internet Service Provider. My router is set up to use specific domain name server (DNS) addresses supplied by my ISP (see Figure 7-1). The problem was that my ISP changed the DNS addresses but failed to inform its customers. The old DNS addresses worked, but the new ones worked better. Call your ISP, ask tech support if they've changed the DNS addresses, and ask for help in making the changes.
