Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > LOCK DOWN YOUR USB FLASH DRIVE

LOCK DOWN YOUR USB FLASH DRIVE

The Annoyance:

Those little USB Flash drives are really convenient. I can copy over hundreds of megabytes of data in a few seconds and carry it off in a package no bigger than a key fob. The problem is, so can unsavory data thieves. If I left my PC for just a few minutes, someone could easily make off with my personal files, completely undetected.

The Fix:

Some corporations have banned USB drives as well as devices with similar capabilities, such as MP3 players. Of course, short of strip-searching everyone who leaves the building, such a ban is toothless. A few have chosen the more drastic solution of removing USB connectors or-gasp!-plugging them with epoxy. If you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed, there's a less permanent, more effective solution, which involves editing the Registry.
