Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > SAFELY REMOVE A USB FLASH DRIVE

SAFELY REMOVE A USB FLASH DRIVE

The Annoyance:

I often use a USB Flash drive (essentially, a key fob that holds gobs of data and plugs into a USB port) to move files between computers. When I'm ready to pull the drive out of the USB port, I dutifully double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows' System Tray. But then the inquisition begins: I have to select the device I want to remove, click Stop, then review another list of devices, click OK, and then click Close. This rigmarole makes me want to not-so-safely remove Windows.

The Fix:

Fortunately, the fix is so easy you won't believe it. Don't double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon. Don't right-click the icon. Just click it once with the left button, and the icon sprouts a menu of attached removable devices. Click the one you want to remove, and in a few moments a balloon tip lets you know it's safe to do so.
