Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > LOST SCREW, BIG PROBLEMS

LOST SCREW, BIG PROBLEMS

The Annoyance:

I upgraded my PC's sound card recently and dropped the little screw that holds the add-in card in place. The screw's somewhere in the case and for the life of me, I can't find it.

The Fix:

Find it, bub, because if you don't-and it dislodges from wherever it's sitting and lands on your system board-your computer's toast. A stray screw can short out your system board faster than a teenager can clean out an all-you-can-eat buffet. Turn off your PC, remove all the cables and the side covers, and gently tip and shake the system. If that doesn't free the screw, grab a flashlight and start looking for it. When you find it, place a tiny dab of wax or glue stick on the tip of a screwdriver and grab the errant screw that way. Still can't find the screw? You may need to pop the PC's lid, remove all the cards, and, if need be, the motherboard itself.
