You need a modem

Before you can get connected in the first place, you need a modem, which is a device that transforms the data sent between computers. The kind of modem you need depends on how you plan to connect to the Internet.

You have basically two choices. You will connect through a dial-up phone modem, which is built into your Mac, or a high-speed broadband modem, which you'll get through your ISP. (If you have a choice, go for the broadband—it's always on, it's fast, and Mac OS X really prefers broadband.)
