Chapter 10. How to Surf the Web > Shortcut to enter address

Shortcut to enter address

And here's an extra-special shortcut you will love. In most browsers on the Mac, you don't have to type in the entire ugly web address with the http:// and all. For one thing, you never need to type http://. So skip that part altogether. If the rest of the address is in this format, www.something.com, all you need to type is something. Really.

For instance, to go to http://www.apple.com, all you need to type is apple, then hit Return or Enter. The browser looks for a .com address with the name you entered, and if it finds one, it takes you there. (If the browser cannot find a web site with that “domain” name, it does a search for that topic and shows you the results of the search.)
