Keys on your keyboard

Your keyboard has a number of special keys that you will use all the time. Some of them are called “modifier keys” because they don't do anything when you press them down all by themselves—they only make something happen when used in combination with other keys or with the mouse.

Below are the keys you will become very familiar with, if you're not already. In Chapter 5 you'll start using keyboard shortcuts to do things on your Mac, and in that chapter I'll show you the symbols for each key that you see in the menus.
