Smartphone Basics

Smartphones come in two flavors of wireless network access: CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), which covers most of the United States, and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), which is predominant throughout much of the world and is finally gaining ground in the United States. In addition to making and receiving calls, GSM phones can take advantage of SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging and create data connections like a regular modem.
