Chapter 5. Contacts > Importing Contacts into Palm Desktop

Importing Contacts into Palm Desktop

There's a good chance that you already have a stash of contact information stored in a desktop PIM program, or maybe even a customized database or Excel spreadsheet. If so, you should be able to transfer your records into Palm Desktop with a minimum of fuss.

To import contacts from a PIM

1.
In your existing PIM, select the export function—most programs include something like Export under the File menu.

2.
Export the file as a tab-delimited text file; if you are presented with the option to include field names (such as “Last Name” or “City”), go ahead and include them.

3.
In Palm Desktop, choose Import from the File menu.

4.
Click and drag the field labels in the left pane of the Specify Import Fields (Windows) or Import (Macintosh) dialog box to match the data in the right pane (Figures 5.59 and 5.60).

Figure 5.59. In Windows Palm Desktop, drag the field labels to match the record's field-mapping order.

Figure 5.60. The Mac Palm Desktop takes a similar approach to Windows. This step can be slightly monotonous, but you'll appreciate it later on.

5.
When the data looks right to you, click OK to begin the import process. After a few seconds, the records will be available to use.
