Chapter 4. Calendar > Setting Preferences and Display Options

Setting Preferences and Display Options

The 160 by 160-pixel screen on many Palm devices can display 25,600 pixels, which sounds like a lot until you consider that the minimum PC screen resolution today is 640 by 480 pixels (or a total of 307,200 pixels). It's easy to see why every effort has been made to keep the Palm's small screen uncluttered yet understandable. Even on high-resolution displays, simplicity is key. Calendar displays time in daily, weekly, and monthly views. The amped up Agenda view displays a day's events with due (and overdue) tasks and even your VersaMail inbox (Figure 4.1).

Figure 4.1. Calendar displays your time (from top) in daily, weekly, and monthly views. The Agenda view (bottom) shows tasks as well.

Changing some of the display options allows you to specify how dense or sparse your calendar will appear.

To set Calendar preferences

1.
Select Preferences from the Options menu.

2.
If you've ever wished you could set your own hours, here's your chance. Select the Start Time and End Time by tapping the arrows to the right of the time boxes (Figure 4.2).

Figure 4.2. Most people choose regular business hours. Checking the Alarm Preset box adds an alarm to each new event you create.

3.
The Preferences dialog also contains settings for Calendar's alarm. Checking Alarm Preset specifies that each new event includes an alarm, which will go off according to the number of minutes you specify.

4.
You can also specify which sound the alarm will use, how often it plays when the alarm goes off, and at what interval it will play until you dismiss it.

5.
Tap OK to return to the Calendar views.

Display options

Display Options is split into three different screens with a mix of global and individual controls for Agenda, Day, and Month views. The biggest global addition to Calendar is the inclusion of categories and a popup menu that can filter Day and Month views. (We'll cover individual settings within each view section over the next few pages.)

To set global display preferences

1.
Choose Display Options from the Options menu or write -Y.

2.
Tap the Default View popup to choose which Calendar screen will be your default: Agenda, Day, Week, or Month.

3.
To add functionality to sort based on categories within the Day, Week, and Month views, mark the Show Category List option—found only when viewing options for Day or Month (Figure 4.3).

Figure 4.3. Select Show Category List (found when editing display preferences for Day or Month) to filter by category in the Day, Week, and Month views.

4.
Tap OK to return to the Calendar views.

✓ Tips

  • The Show Category List option provides a small bonus—a display of the current time on the Week and Month views (Figure 4.4). The current date joins the time display when today's date is selected in Day view.

Figure 4.4. By turning on the Show Category List option, you'll also see the current time in the Day, Week, and Month views.

  • For those times when manipulating the stylus is inconvenient, or just to save time, press the Calendar button on the case to switch between views.
