Software Setup: Mac OS 9.2 and Earlier

Now that the Macs and other network devices are linked physically, it's time to make them talk to one another. In either Mac OS 9.2 and earlier or Mac OS X, you do this by configuring the Mac's software. The following sections show you how to do so in Mac OS 9.

Configure AppleTalk

The first thing you need to do is make sure that your Mac is prepared to talk to other Macs on the network through the right port. To prepare your Mac, open the AppleTalk control panel, and if you're running an Ethernet network, choose Ethernet from the Connect Via pop-up menu. If you're using AirPort, choose AirPort from this menu.
