It seems to me that there are three distinct groups of people who help you get through this book-scribbling process:

Those who actively help you give birth to the thing.

Those who stay out of your way and pick up the slack so you have enough time to complete the job.

Those who, just by their existence, inspire you to do it at all.

With this in mind, I'd like to incline my noggin in a most grateful way to:

Group 1: The folks at Peachpit Press who took what can only be described as an amorphous proposal (followed up by the barest of outlines) and still signed on the dotted line. This book's editor, Cliff Colby, who A) listened to that first proposal without once interrupting “You're kidding, right?” B) never uttered the phrase “You realize the book is due in a month, yes?” even when it seemed I'd badly slipped the schedule; and C) was as thoughtful and thorough as any author could wish. Mac Publishing's Big Cheese, Colin Crawford, who generously granted me permission to use the title of my Macworld column, “Mac 911,” for this book.

Group 2: My wife, Claire, who managed to set up a new house, refinance same, scout out a new community, haul in salt and cartridges, and act as primary parent to our child, Adelaide Rose, while I clacked on heedlessly in the basement. My Macworld editors (Jennifer Berger, Linda Comer, Scholle Sawyer-McFarland, Lisa Schmeiser, Jason Snell, Terri Stone, and in particular, Nancy Peterson) who graciously shuffled assignments to accommodate my schedule. The boys of System 9—Ed Bangert, Hobey Landreth, Kevin Mullane, Pat Reilly, and Steve Smith—who covered for me when I couldn't make a gig.

Group 3: And the following just because of what they do (or have done): Patty Ames, Henry Bortman, Jim Bradbury, Ullysis Bravo, Shelly Brisbin, Cys Bronner (and Dave), George Clark, Fred Davis, Kristina DeNike, Philip Dyer, Cheryl England, Adam and Tonya Engst, Bart Farkas, Tara Gibb, Andy Gore, Nancy Groth, Ilene Hoffman, the Holmes Bros. (Chris, Joe, and Tim), Trish Huffman, Andy Ihnatko, Russ Ito, Susan Janus, Shawn King, Ted Landau, Leo Laporte, Brett Larson, Rick LePage, Bob LeVitus, Chris Lombardi, the Loyola Boys (Gil and Roman), Jeffy Milstead, Rik Myslewski, Michael Penwarden, Pam Pfiffner, David Pogue, Jim Shatz-Akin, Michael Swaine, Tim Warner, Johnny Wilson, and Jon Zilber.

And of course, thanks to Apple Computer for indirectly making it possible for me to put bread on the table during the past several years. We have our little spats from time to time, but no one does it better.
