Mac OS Desktop Elements

Besides the pointers, you're going to encounter several other items in your cruise around the Desktop. Most of these are icons—graphical representations of files, hard drives, programs, and the like. These icons let you see at a glance what you're working with. (Older operating systems used text alone to represent these items.) Unless you've been moving things about on your Mac, you'll encounter just a few icons on your Desktop. You can put more there or remove the existing ones if you like.

Files

Files are a lot like their paper counterparts in the real world. Their main job in life is to hold information. Typical files are such things as digital photos or letters you've written. Each file has a parent program that launches when you double-click the file; you can tell what that program is by looking at the file's icon (Figure 1.5).
