Chapter 13. Utilities > The Obligatory ResEdit Section

The Obligatory ResEdit Section

No chapter on Mac utilities is complete without a discussion of Apple's free application-resource editor, ResEdit. This program takes full advantage of the way Mac OS 9 and earlier software is designed. Every Mac OS 9 and earlier application has a resource fork, containing all the visible parts of the program, such as its dialog boxes, menus, icons, buttons, and other interface elements. It also has a data fork, containing the core program code, which you don't want to mess with unless you have at least some knowledge about writing software.

If you don't like the keyboard shortcuts a program offers, or the way a menu is labeled, or the presentation of its graphics elements, ResEdit gives you the chance to change a few things to your taste. But you can't just jump in and change things around without a measure of caution. One wrong move, and the program will fail to run or will crash without mercy.
