Chapter 13. Utilities > Some Cool (or at Least Useful) Utilities

Some Cool (or at Least Useful) Utilities

It's almost impossible to cover the breadth and scope of Mac utilities. There are so many thousands of programs to choose from that I have had to make a personal and arbitrary selection, simply addressing the ones that I find compelling. This final section of this chapter will cover some of the programs that appeal to my unusual sensibilities.

CapsOff.

Amazing what ten bucks can deliver these days. Long ago, a Mac keyboard had a real detent for the feature. You got a tactile message when you were in all-caps mode. Unfortunately, on new keyboards is a mere toggle, with only a little light that goes on to identify which mode you're in. If you don't look down and you accidentally press the wrong key, you'll find yourself typing paragraphs of capitals before you know it. This is especially irritating in a chat room, where everyone will start wondering what you're yelling about. The CapsOff shareware program, from Redpoint Software (www.redpointsoftware.com), is designed to remedy this situation. You can set CapsOff to flash an icon and even play a sound when is engaged. And while we're on this topic, whatever happened to that old Caps Lock extension from Apple? Back in the days of the original PowerBooks, this little extension gave you a useful menu-bar display; alas, the Mac OS, from 8 on, no longer supports it.
