Chapter 6. Printing > Desktop Printing in Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 (BW)

Desktop Printing in Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 (BW)

In System versions before Mac OS 8, you selected a printer pretty much as described above. Every time you needed to print to a different printer, you took a trip to the Chooser. Things changed with Mac OS 8, though, and now you don't always have to go through this step. To save this time, though, you have to spend a little more time up front in setting up your printer so that you can bypass the Chooser.

Starting with Mac OS 8, the Chooser can set up what's called a desktop printer for every printer you select in the Chooser's Connect To window. That means that the first time you select a printer from the Chooser in one of these System versions, the Chooser will probably start prompting you with options concerning desktop printers. A lot of folks get baffled at this point, because they aren't expecting this “help.” They installed their printer driver, plugged in their printer, and thought they were ready to print. Well, almost.
