Chapter 2. Working at Your Desktop > Select more than one item or folder

Select more than one item or folder

Often you will want to move, duplicate, or throw away more than one item. You can select more than one at a time, in one window.

  1. To select more than one item, hold down the Shift key. Each item you select with the Shift key down will be added to the selection.

To deselect one of the items in the selected group, hold the Shift key down and click on it. You see, the Shift key will do whatever it needs to—it will add an item to the group, or it will remove an item from the group. Try it.

This technique is called Shift-click because you hold down the Shift key and click. You might run across commands to Option-click or Command-click, which would be similar—hold down that key and click.

  2. Make sure you have let go of the Shift key, then press on any one of the selected items, and drag out of the window. All of the selected items will come with the one you are dragging. Drop them onto the Desktop, into another window, or on top of another one of your extra folders.

Remember, it is the tip of the pointer that's the boss—all of the selected items will drop wherever you position the tip of the pointer.
