Gray icons

You will see icons that are gray, as shown to the right. Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with them. The gray just means that the File is already open.

If it's a gray folder icon, that folder's window is already open. Just go ahead and double-click on the gray icon, and that window will pop to the front. (If you still don't see the window, perhaps it's "collapsed"; see page 26.)

If it's a gray application icon, that application is already open and running. Go ahead and double-click on the gray icon and that application will come forward and be "active."

Now, you might not think it's active because you don't see anything, but check the menu bar! It's the menu bar for your application, even though there might not be an active window showing. Check the File menu—you can make a new document or open an existing one. (See page 242 for details on this feature where the application is open, but you still see the Desktop!)

If it's a gray CD icon, that CD is already open on your Desktop. Double-click the gray icon and its window will pop forward. (If you double-click a gray CD icon and still don't see the window, the window might be collapsed; see page 26.)
