Chapter 2. Working at Your Desktop > Inserting and removing a CD

Inserting and removing a CD

You will probably use CDs often. All major software you buy, including games, will arrive on a CD. Your iMac came with a number of CDs.

Insert a CD

  1. Some iMacs have a CD tray that you have to pop out so you can put the CD in. If you see a small, colored button on the front of your computer, right under the word "iMac," you have a machine with a CD tray. Push on that colored button and the CD tray will pop partway out. Grab it and gently pull it the rest of the way out.

If you don't have a tray, skip to Step 3.

Like most icons, a CD icon appears gray when its window is open. If you don't see the window, double-click the gray icon and its window will come forward.

  2. Put the CD in the tray, shiny side down, label up. Press down slightly in the middle to snap it onto the centerpiece.

  3. Give the tray a gentle push back inside the computer.

If you don't have a tray, just slide the CD into that slot right under the word "iMac" on the front of your computer.

  4. The icon for the CD will appear on the Desktop (it might take several seconds). If the CD doesn't open by itself to display its window, double-click the CD icon (it isn't always a round icon).
