Keyboard shortcuts

The iMac lets you do a lot of things using the keyboard without having to pick up the mouse. These are called keyboard shortcuts. Once you get used to using keyboard shortcuts, you'll start looking for them.

Modifier keys

Keyboard shortcuts always use "modifier keys," which are those keys that don't do anything when you press them by themselves. For instance, the Shift key is a modiFIer key—if you press it, nothing happens. Something only happens when you press the Shift key in combination with another key, as you do when you want to make capital letters. Each modifier key is represented in the menu by a symbol, shown to the left of the explanations below. The modifier keys are:
