Chapter 21. What's a Peripheral, a Hub, ... > Buy your peripherals carefully!

Buy your peripherals carefully!

Make sure any peripheral device you buy either uses an iMac-compatible usb connection or comes with an iMac-compatible adapter so you can plug it into your computer. Because there are many usb devices made specifically for other kinds of computers, you need to make sure you get the correct kind.

And use the right drivers!

When you connect a new peripheral to a computer, the computer needs certain information to know how to communicate with the new device. This information comes as a piece of software called a driver. When you buy a new peripheral, you will get a disk that contains the driver. It's best to install the driver on your iMac before you connect the device, and then restart the computer. To install the driver, read the directions in the manual that comes with your peripheral!
