What's a port?

Peripherals connect to the computer through "ports." At first a port might look like a fancy plug socket, like the electrical ones in the wall. The difference between a port and an electrical socket is that a port can send information both ways, both to and from the computer. An electrical socket only sends energy in one direction.

Now, the reason you hear so much about peripherals in relation to the iMac is because the iMac has brand-new port technology. So new, in fact, that you need to be careful about buying peripherals; you need to make sure they can connect to your iMac ports. If you already own peripherals that don't have usb ports, you can get adapters to make the connections.
