Chapter 5. Make a Simple Database > Get ready to make a database

Get ready to make a database

Now, you might be in one of four different situations, depending on whether you've been following along or not. Choose the situation you're in and follow the directions:

  1. You just finished the word processing exercise and the letter is still on your screen.

    1. Save this letter once again: press Command S.

    2. Click in its little close box in the upper-left corner, or use the keyboard shortcut Command W (W for Window).

  2. You finished the word processing exercise, saved and closed it, and didn't quit AppleWorks. In the far-right corner of the menu bar, it says AppleWorks (or ClarisWorks) with a tiny logo ( ).

    • You are exactly where you need to be! Don't touch anything. Go to the top of the next page (in this book).

  3. You finished the word processing exercise, saved and closed it, and didn't quit AppleWorks. BUT in the far-right corner of the menu bar, you see a tiny icon of the Macintosh logo ( ).

    1. Click once on that little happy Mac icon to get the Application menu, as shown to the left.

    2. If you didn't actually quit AppleWorks, you will see it listed in the Application menu. Select it.

    3. After you select AppleWorks, the special toolbar should appear at the top of the screen. Go to the next page (in this book).

This is the Application menu. The checkmark indicates what is active, or open, at the moment.

  4. You skipped the word processing exercise, or you turned off your computer and came back later, and AppleWorks is not open on your iMac.

The AppleWorks application icon is inside the folder!

    1. Open AppleWorks just like you did the first time: double-click its icon. (Remember, the AppleWorks application is inside the AppleWorks folder!)

    2. AppleWorks 5: Double-click the choice "Database."

AppleWorks 6: Single-click the choice "Database."

    3. Go to the next page (of this book), but skip the first step because you just started a new document.
