Part I: Let's Start at the Very Beginning  > Mousing, Menus, and More

Chapter 1. Mousing, Menus, and More

If you haven't already taken your iMac out of the box and plugged it in, do so now. Follow the directions provided in the box. I know the directions tell you to plug the computer directly into the wall, but you really should get a surge protector at the hardware store or office supply store (see the illustration to the right). They only cost about $15. Plug the cable into the surge protector, then plug the surge protector into the wall. This will help protect your computer from the surges of electricity that happen all the time. If you live in an area that has lightning storms (like I do), the only real way to protect your computer is to unplug everything, including any modem and printer cables, right out of the wall.

This is a typical inexpensive surge protector. Plug your computer into this and plug this into the wall. If you get a surge protector with the phone ports, you should also plug your modem cord into this, then run another cord from this to your jack.
