Chapter 15. Getting Connected > EarthLink Total Access

EarthLink Total Access

EarthLink is a national isp (Internet Service Provider), as opposed to a local isp that would be physically located in your area. The software to connect to EarthLink is already on your iMac. Even though EarthLink is not local to most people, it provides a local access number for most places. If there is no local number available for your area, EarthLink provides an 800 number (although the 800 number costs an extra $4.95 an hour). The current cost to connect to EarthLink is something like $19.95 a month, and it will be billed to your credit card automatically. If you choose to connect with EarthLink, you will be given an email address.

If you are in Hawaii or Alaska, be sure to read the fine print for EarthLink service—they apply the foreign rate to those states, which is an extra $9 an hour! And check to see just how local the local number is; for instance, in New Mexico there are only two access numbers for the entire state, so most people in New Mexico would have to pay the toll charge for the telephone/modem call on their phone bill in addition to the EarthLink monthly service charge.
