Chapter 12. Receiving Alerts and Notifications: Microsoft .NET Alerts

Although alerts and notifications are not gadgets in and of themselves, receiving them on gadgets such as mobile phones, pagers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), traditional desktop computers, and laptops can be an excellent way to stay connected to key items of information like news and weather updates, financial information, calendar events and appointment reminders, travel notifications, and shopping and auction alerts.

Along with instant messaging, alerts and notifications have become one of the early killer applications on wireless devices for consumers and businesses alike. They have all the characteristics to be successful in the mobile medium. They are short in terms of content length (and therefore can be read easily on handheld devices), they contain important and timely information, and are able to be acted upon by the recipient.
