How It Works

Single sign-on in the case of the Microsoft .NET Passport system works by providing a user with a place to manage his or her profile that is associated with a specific username and password. On the .NET Passport Web site (Figure 7-1), you can currently store your first and last name, email address, country/region, state, zip code, time zone, gender, birth date, and occupation. These are the types of information that most people do not mind providing, because it avoids more personal information such as address, social security number, or credit card numbers. Microsoft uses your email as your username and allows you to use any password of your choice.
