How It Works

Self-checkout lanes work very simply. You just select your groceries or other items as you would normally and then proceed to the self-checkout line. Once you’re at the line, you simply scan and bag each of your items and then pay by cash, credit, or check card. You can even use coupons. If you pay by cash, you can get exact change. Some stores, such as Wal-Mart, place an employee in a nearby booth location to monitor several self-checkout lanes, often four lanes or so, and to offer assistance to anyone if needed. This can be useful if you need special attention, such as when purchasing tobacco products or alcoholic beverages. For reference, Figure 35-1 shows the self-checkout equipment from NCR called the NCR FastLane.
