Benefits

The benefits for consumers are that we’ll be able to shop more easily in the future and our household objects will effectively become more “intelligent.” Conceptually, when we’re in a store, we’ll be able to pick up an item with an attached ePC and purchase that item by simply walking off with it! An RFID reader in the store entryway would be able to read not only the item description and price, but perhaps also your RFID tag linked to your credit card information. In this way, a store’s point-of-sale system knows what you have purchased and how to charge you.

Of course, the early implementations of such a scenario may be a little more conservative. What we might see is a self-checkout area where you can scan your items, in much the same way that you can scan items using a bar-code scanner such as the NCR FastLane solution in Wal-Mart and similar stores, together with an area for you to wave your RFID tag.
