Chapter 12. Content Formats > Asset Management Formats

12.4. Asset Management Formats

SMPTE has been working with users, manufacturers, and various industry groups to provide some universal standardized asset management solutions. Most of this work is based on the SMPTE Data Model that grew out of SMPTE's seminal 1998 cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) on digital program interchange.

A simplified asset management system streams the content of individual material media onto a centralized asset storage facility indexed by a catalog database (see Figure 12.10). consists of storage media. Compressed stream formats, such as MPEG program streams and MPEG transport streams, are well suited for the transport and storage of uncut shots or for emission; DVDs are based on the MPEG Program format. The DV and DVCPRO formats are successful for camcorders and news applications. Long-GoP MPEG is heavily used in emission systems.
