Chapter 17. Upgrading Your Hardware > Changing an Optical Drive

Changing an Optical Drive

Your Pavilion has two optical drives, in some combination of CD, DVD, or CD-Writer, depending on your specific model. You might decide that you'd like to upgrade to a drive with more capacity or that you'd like two CD-Writer drives, for example.

✓ To replace an optical drive, follow these steps:

1.
With the computer panel and fan duct removed, and the computer on its side, unscrew the two screws on the bottom drive (marked C in Figure 17.4). If you want to remove the top drive, undo both screws B and C.

Figure 17.4. Either optical drive can be replaced.

2.
Push one or both drives out through the front panel of the computer. There will be cables coming off the back of the drives.

3.
Remove the cables that are attached to whichever drive you want to replace and pull the drive entirely free of the computer casing through the front panel.

4.
Being sure that the jumper setting on the new drive you're going to install is set for Cable Select (CS), slide it through the front of the computer.

5.
Reattach the cables to the drive and replace the drive in the casing.

6.
Replace the two screws.

7.
You're ready to close up the computer with the steps in the last section of this chapter.
