Chapter 17. Upgrading Your Hardware > Opening Up Your Computer

Opening Up Your Computer

In Chapter 16, I outlined safety precautions you should use whenever opening up your computer. I'll repeat them here because they are very important:

  • Remember that you're dealing with expensive equipment that has many small parts and that can hold an electrical charge even when it's turned off.

  • Disconnect everything from the system, including phone lines, network connections, and power connections.

  • It's a good idea to wear an antistatic wrist strap when working with electronic equipment and to use a foam pad of some sort to conduct any electricity away from you.

  • Beware of sharp metal edges when removing the cover to your computer.
