Chapter 3. Turn on Your Pavilion: You're... > Turning Your Pavilion Off

Turning Your Pavilion Off

Now that you've mastered turning on your computer and have seen an overview of what comes with your HP Pavilion, it's time to learn how to turn the computer off. There are three simple choices to make here:

  • Stand by— You can put your computer in Standby mode, which uses less power and turns your screen dark, as if the computer were off. Standby keeps everything that you had on your computer screen just the way it was at the point when you went into Standby mode; when you come out of Standby mode (which you can do by clicking your mouse or a key on your keyboard), any programs, documents, or dialog boxes you had open will still be open.

  • Restart— You will sometimes be instructed to restart your computer, either because you have changed a setting or installed new software and the system needs to start again to implement the changes, or because a problem has occurred and the computer needs to reinitialize itself to solve it. When you choose Restart, your computer turns itself off and then on again.

  • Turn off— Sayonara. Turn Off means just that. Your computer turns itself off completely, and you'll have to press the Power button on your Pavilion to start up again.
