Chapter 1. The Box Is Open…Now What? > PCs 101: The Parts of Your Computer

PCs 101: The Parts of Your Computer

When you unpack your Pavilion you'll find several items, including hardware, software, and documentation to help you set up and use your computer. You'll find:

  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)— This is the computer tower that holds the computer hard drive, which is where all the software and systems for the computer are stored.

  • Keyboard— Hardware that attaches to your computer, such as a monitor, keyboard, or printer, is called a peripheral. A keyboard is an input device that allows you to enter text and move around software programs.

  • Mouse— The mouse is a device that allows you to select and manipulate items in a software program.

  • Power cord— The power cord connects the CPU to your power source.

  • Speakers— Two speakers are provided to allow you to hear system sounds and audio files.

  • Modem/telephone cable— In order to connect to the Internet or send faxes, you'll need to run this phone cord from your phone jack to your computer.
