Chapter 13. Security and You > Avoiding Viruses Like the Plague

Avoiding Viruses Like the Plague

Computer viruses are the snake in the computing garden of Eden. Why people create them is beyond the understanding of most of us, but they do. A virus can play havoc with your computer's performance, making software crash or weird messages appear. The bottom line is that you don't want to catch this kind of virus.

How Viruses Work

Viruses are little programs called executable files that are set to run on your computer and perform some activity. Computer viruses can do a number of things. They can destroy data on your computer hard drive. They can generate an email to everybody in your Address Book and send the virus to their computer to do similar damage. Some initiate immediately when you open the file, and others are set to run on a particular date or when you perform some specific action.
