Part: 2 Getting to Know Windows XP > Getting Around Windows XP

Chapter 4. Getting Around Windows XP

In this Chapter

  • Learning your way around the Windows desktop and Start menu

  • Creating shortcuts

  • Navigating around Windows and opening programs and folders

  • Changing the appearance of things

All the wonderful software and tools that are packed into your HP Pavilion are like the parts of a car. They are wonderful to have, but, without an engine, they simply won't go. Windows XP is the engine for your computer. Windows is an operating system: It provides the functionality that enables you to use all that software and to give commands to your computer.

In this chapter you'll climb into Windows, take a look at its dashboard, and kick its tires, that is, you'll explore the Windows desktop and the commands on the Windows Start menu. Then, you'll take a look at where the files and folders that make up your computer programs and documents are kept and take a spin around your computer drives. You'll see a few ways to organize windows of information on your computer screen and explore how to open and close software programs and folders.

Just as you also like to look at different colors and upholstery fabrics when you buy a new car, you'll also enjoy looking at the different options Windows offers for changing colors and images that greet you on the Windows desktop.
