Chapter 4. Getting Around Windows XP > Taking a Look at My Computer

Taking a Look at My Computer

Now its time to look at the contents of your computer a little more closely. Your HP Pavilion, like every other computer, stores computer programs and computer files, ready for you to open them up and get to work. The shortcuts on your desktop are just that: shortcuts to launch these programs. However, you can use the My Computer folder when you want to see the various items on your computer and to interact with other media, such as CDs and floppy disks.

Taking a Drive

There's a lot of stuff on your computer that lives on something called your hard drive. The hard drive is an actual metal disk inside your computer where bits and bytes of information about your programs, and the files that you create with those programs, are stored. In addition to a hard drive, you also have a floppy drive; a CD drive; and, on most Pavilion models, a Rewriteable CD (CD-RW) drive.
