  • Visiting My HPClub and HP Help and Support Online

  • Take a shopping trip

  • Learning online with Encarta and Next Generation Learning

The Internet, which began in the 1960s as a way for government and academic researchers to share information among themselves, has today become a venue for shopping, learning, investing, playing games, listening to music, getting the news, and communicating with others.

In this chapter, you get to explore the Internet and the World Wide Web. The Internet is a large network of computers, while the Web is a set of documents stored on those networks in the form of Web sites and Web pages.

note

People use terms like riding the Internet highway and surfing the Web somewhat interchangeably. For the most part, most of what you'll see online consists of Web documents stored on the Internet.
