Chapter 13. Security and You

In this Chapter

  • Setting passwords

  • Making security settings in your browser

  • Protecting yourself against viruses

  • Keeping kids safe online

  • Avoiding spams and scams

The Internet can be a wonderful place, but, when you set foot online, you are opening yourself and your computer up to millions of people. Some of these people are nice, and some are…well…not so nice. Some transmit viruses, commit credit card fraud, pelt you with junk mail, or sell your name and contact information to other people who may or may not be nice themselves. There are abuses of your privacy and several sites out there that you would probably prefer your kids not see.

The good news is that there are protections built into Windows and your browser software that you can use to keep safe. You can also use McAfee VirusScan (you get a free 90-day trial of this software with your Pavilion purchase) to stop damaging viruses from doing your computer any harm.
