What's a Web Server?

A Web server consists of hardware, an operating system, and the software used to serve Web pages. The term Web server is often used interchangeably to refer to both the complete server, including the hardware and operating system, and the Web server software itself.

Although many designers don't get to decide what Web server environment to use (especially if they work for a corporation whose MIS department dictates those sorts of things), some have the luxury of deciding how their servers are set up or picking and choosing among hosting providers who meet their needs.
