Chapter 15. Using Layers > Stacking Layers

Stacking Layers

You may have been wondering what exactly the Z column in the Layers task pane's list is for. This setting enables you to control how layers overlap when two or more are visible at the same time. If you think of the dimensions of the page as having an X axis to represent horizontal position and a Y axis for vertical position, the Z axis is used to stack layers on top of one another on the page. This value is known as the layer's Z-index.

Changing the Z-index for a layer is done in pretty much the same way as naming it. Simply right-click the layer and choose Modify Z-Index, or just double-click the existing Z-index value. You can then set a new value.
