Chapter 19. Testing Your Web > Keeping an Eye on File Size

Keeping an Eye on File Size

It's very important to keep an eye on how big your files become when you're designing your Web site. Everything (text, graphics, audio, video, animations, and so on) that is a part of your Web site contributes to the time it takes to display your pages in the user's browser.

If you've ever come across a Web site on the Internet that seems to take forever to load, large file sizes may be the reason (although a slow network connection is also a big factor, one that's beyond your control). Such items as sound and video files or even uncompressed photos can make for very inflated pages. A big file size results in a long wait. Compressing the file size of your graphics is explained in Chapter 6, “Creating and Modifying Graphics.” Optimizing your code is discussed in Chapter 11, “Using Code in FrontPage.”
