Understanding Search Engines and Your Site

One of the first things any site owner should do after launching a Web site is to get that site listed in a Web search engine. Registering with a search engine can be one of the best ways to enable people to find you.

That said, simply registering your site with a search engine is not necessarily going to drive a huge amount of traffic to your site. You also need to find a way to improve your site's rank in the list. For example, suppose there are 100,000 sites that cover the subject of home improvement. If your site is also devoted to home improvement, but your rank (or the number of entries that appear before yours in a search engine) is 85,001, even the most dedicated Web surfer is unlikely to wade through tens of thousands of other entries to find you.
