Chapter 17. Databases > Web Server Technologies

Web Server Technologies

To understand how FrontPage produces pages that display database results, it helps to know a little about the technology behind it all. Microsoft Windows and its standard Web server, Internet Information Server, utilize a technology called Active Server Pages (ASP) to generate dynamic pages. ASP pages (with the extension .asp) are processed before they are sent to the browser. They contain special blocks of code that are read and executed by the server, where the ASP code blocks are then replaced by the output of that executed code. The code that ASP uses is written using a scripting language similar to client-side scripts. (They can even use the same JavaScript language that is used on the client, but a derivative of Visual Basic known as VBScript is more commonly used.) The server-side scripts, however, do not respond to browser events in the same way as client scripts. They are executed when the page is requested, generate their content, and then disappear in the final form of the page sent to the browser.
