Chapter 6. Creating and Modifying Graphi... > Organizing Pictures with Thumbnails

Organizing Pictures with Thumbnails

Thumbnails are reduced-size versions of images (or documents or pages) and are useful because they enable visitors to preview an image before opening the larger version, which is apt to take longer to download. Depending on the version of Windows you have and how it's configured, images stored on your hard drive may already display as thumbnails when you open a folder containing them.

What occurs with a Web thumbnail image is a little different from with regular (nonthumbnail) images. Like a regular image, a thumbnail is also included in a page when it opens in a browser. However, unlike a regular image, the thumbnail can be clicked to open a separate page containing the full-size image.
