What Are Style Sheets?

A style sheet is a template that you create to control the appearance of a web page. The sheet embeds special commands, which are recognized by browsers that support style sheets, within the HTML formatting tags of the page. Style sheets provide the following:

  • More complex formatting capabilities, especially greater control over text appearance and placement.

  • More flexible and simpler control of formatting across multiple pages. You don't need to turn tags on and off to change the look of individual page elements, and the reduced number of tags makes your HTML code much easier to read and follow.

  • Fast changes to the formatting of a page or pages, by changing a few parameters in a linked style sheet. This lets you make major changes to the appearance of a whole site, without the drudgery of modifying every page the site contains.

  • Greater potential for sophisticated page design, based on a style sheet standard that all browsers will (eventually) be capable of recognizing.
