Design Corner: When to Use JavaScript

Scripting with JavaScript is a very exciting prospect, but don't overdo it. Use the scripts where they seem appropriate, and don't add unnecessary script. Unnecessary script can add up quickly and burden the Web browser with longer download times. It can also make the Web page more complex than it needs to be from a usability perspective.

Avoid using JavaScript to build the Web page. In Chapter 23, "JavaScript and Client-Side Computing," you will see how you can use the Document Object Model within the Web browser and the methods for writing text to the Web browser window. However, you probably don't want to use this technique for writing static HTML to the Web browser window. In the long run, it will make your Web page much more difficult to support and change.
