Chapter 31. SharePoint Team Services > Installing SharePoint

Installing SharePoint

There are two distinct aspects to SharePoint: the server and the client. Anyone with a Web browser and an account on a SharePoint server can be a client, and no software has to be installed for this purpose. However, for any client activity to occur at all, including the administration of SharePoint webs, the SharePoint Team Services software—the server software itself—must be installed on a computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, Server, or Advanced Server, on which Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 or higher is also installed.

If you administer an IIS server, you can install SharePoint from the Office XP CD. However, it's not even included as part of the standard Office XP setup dialog box. Instead, you'll find it in the folder named SHAREPT, from which you can launch the setup.exe file and tailor the installation as you see fit.
